Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi wins 2023 Nobel Peace Prize
On October 6, 2023, imprisoned Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her "fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all." Mohammadi is the 19th woman to win the prize and the first Iranian since Shirin Ebadi in 2003.
Mohammadi has been a tireless advocate for women's rights and democracy in Iran for over three decades. She has co-founded several human rights organizations, including the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), and has campaigned for the abolition of the death penalty. She has also been a vocal critic of the Iranian government's human rights record, and has spoken out against the detention and torture of political prisoners.
Mohammadi has been arrested and imprisoned multiple times for her activism. In 2015, she was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of "assembly and collusion against national security" and "propaganda against the state." She was released on medical furlough in 2016, but was rearrested in 2018 and sentenced to an additional 16 years in prison. She is currently serving her sentence at Evin Prison in Tehran.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Mohammadi's "courage and determination" in its announcement of the award. The committee also said that Mohammadi's "fight for human rights and democracy is an inspiration to us all."
Mohammadi's Nobel Peace Prize is a powerful recognition of her work and her sacrifice. It is also a rebuke to the Iranian government, which has repeatedly cracked down on dissent and imprisoned human rights activists.
The award is also a timely boost for the Iranian people, who have been protesting against the government for over a year. The protests were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly violating Iran's strict dress code for women.
The protests have since grown into a broader movement against the Iranian government's repressive policies. Mohammadi's Nobel Peace Prize is a sign of solidarity with the Iranian people and their struggle for freedom and democracy.
